Best practices for creating URL
Below-mentioned are the best practices for creating URL:
- Using Keywords: Adding keywords in URL not only helps users to understand the subject related on website but also, it allows search engine to provide better ranking.
- Descriptive URLs: Use those words in URL structure which describe your page content which helps in clearly stating what your page is all about to the users.
- Shorter URL: A short URL is easy to read, copy and paste. Avoid the usage of prepositions. The URLs with 35 to 40 characters rank higher in search but, this does not mean that long URL structures cannot be used.
- Important keywords in the beginning: If you are using long URL structure it’s better to use important keywords in the beginning.
- Use of hyphen (dash) vs. underscore: Google has clearly advised webmasters to use hyphen over underscore.
For example:
www.example.com/key-word
Google reads the words separated by hyphen as two different words, as “key” and “word”.
www.example.com/key_word
When underscore is used Google combines the words and reads it as a single word, as “keyword”.
Though other search engines like Bing do not consider hyphen or underscore.
